First I
will say a large thank you to all of you who send congratulations on my 86
years birthday 17/8. This day was a bit
different from all others. Lots of canoers who return from a fine week in the
DANO Canoe area. That’s normal, it was only ca 60 persons.
The wind
get strong at midday and we had some guests from a college. They started to
paddle back to where they have hired the canoe. After ca 30 minutes we got an
emergency signal from a Tracker they had on board. The guest we have and those
from our college have all a Tracker with them so we during the week can see where
they are in the area. I got the report
from the group leader at our camp about an emergency signal and call 112 for
emergency. Resque boat, ambulance and a group of rescue people came to
Nordmarken Canoe Center from Årjäng after ca 15 minutes. Even a rescue
helicopter came after ca 30 minutes. After
a while the 2 person who have capsized and got the canoe full of water was seen
on a small island where they had swam to.
All
activities was over after ca 1 hour and thank you to all the rescue people who
was involved in the operation to safe the canoers who went out in bad weather
condition to paddle ca 1,5 km to the other side of the lake. Our college came later
with car and trailer to bring the back to their camp in the south. Well done. After the incident all at our camp and my family had a fine evening around a fire at our Base Camp and was given a small birthday cake.
A different
birthday for me, but happy that all went well.
The end of
the story will be “don’t paddle in stormy weather, stay at shore and start paddling when the waves and wind are slowing down
